Hi, I've got a couple of questions about mounting a John Deere 237 on a Late A JD. We had one on a 3020 when I was growing up and I have a chance to buy a "long nose" 237 that has always been shedded and is only a couple miles away. Supposedly all the screens, 1,000rpm drive, etc. are with it for the 3010/3020, etc. tractors, all in all a pretty decent find. We(Dad) still have the 3020, but chances are slim & none that I'll ever be able use it for a picker while he still has any say in the matter..... Anyway, we also have a Late "A" that needs some TLC but could be a candidate for the "picker tractor".
First question is, how can you tell if it has the heat treated axles and how necessary is it to have them? The wheels were dished out(hub inside) when we got it which around here usually meant it had a picker on it once but without knowing the complete history of the tractor it's impossible to know for sure.
Secondly, will a 540 drive sprocket for a 227 work on a 237?
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated, I figured this might be the better way to go in the long run that trying to find a one-row 101 for my Late "B"!

Went and looked at the picker today. It's all there, but critters have been digging in the building and it's getting buried. The wagon elevator bottom is in the dirt! Everything is there for the "New Generation" tractors(3010/3020, etc.), all the screens, muffler shield, and 1,000rpm drive sprocket. Gonna take some digging to get it out and I still don't have a tractor to put it on. What to do, what to do....
Picker will fit a Late A but no power steering would be a hand full. Picker weighing in at 3700 lbs. I would think the PTO sprockets from 227 would work. Some of the late 227 pickers ran the universal
mount that was later used on 237 picker. Attached is a photo of a late 227 picker with universal mount. Sprockets should be 33 tooth on PTO shaft.
Thanks for the info & pics! When I was a kid we had a 227 on a 3020 before we got the 237 so I knew about the universal mounts, but thanks for the reminder. Been brainstorming with a few folks about the possibility of putting a 60 governor & pump on the A so there is room for the power steering pump on the side(uses the same base gasket, several parts are the same). Might require a bit of "MacGivering" but if crazy or desperate enough it should work.... I think need my head examined!
