We pick narrow row corn (30") with a NI 324. We replaced the lift cylinder with a fixed bar that sets the snoots no more than 1 foot off of the ground. The two rows of corn bend nicely around the center snoot, with very little lost corn. You have to be a little more careful to keep the picker centered on the row, and the purists might get a little crabby, but it works. The price of NI325s around SW Iowa is up to ten times the price of NI 324s, so it is worth it for us. We only pick about ten acres (two squirrel cages) each year to grind and feed to our fat cattle, so the four NI324s I picked up for a total of $1800 will probably last our operation the rest of my life, and possible for my kids, as well. They are plentiful in this area. I saw a NI325 narrow row picker go for over $3,000, and they don't come up very often. I have heard of welding/machine shops that will somehow convert a wide row picker to a narrow row picker. We decided that since our system worked for us, we weren't going to bother. This type of modification seems like it stands a good chance of wrecking the picker, but maybe someone on this forum has had a good experience with it.
