Darn it Joe...you beat me to the idea!! I think it a great idea to share wagons. Pictures, manufacturer, gear, and other information would be great. It may take me a while to get pictures of all of the wagons I have because of the pile of snow around the farm. I may not be able to get some pictures together until spring.

The one I miss and wish I had back was a Lundell barge box on a Lundell gear. My dad bought it and it didn't look like much but I spent a summer painting the wood and metal. We sold it on the auction when he retired from farming back in 1995. Any body have one like this? Any one have a wagon like this and want to sell? While I am asking and it Christmas time, any one have the red Lundell barge box my dad once had and sold at Gehling Auction in Preston, MN in 1995? One can wish, can't he?

Can't wait to see the wagons!

Click on the link below to see some of the wagons I use. I tried uploading them directly here like I usually do but that didn't work (don't know why?). Also check archived posts on this forum - I have downloaded a lot of other pictures to this forum over the past 2 years.

My favorite that i dont have was an old flatbed that turned into a hopper when the bed was raised and supports added. With a rocking bolster it was the perfect ear corn wagon. I need to put a new bed and new steering linkage on my grandfathers dearborn wagon and hope to put a false endgate on so i can crank the load back instead of having to shovel like he and i later did.

Sharp looking wagon! Really nice work on the gear and box!! How many bushels is this wagon? Is this just for parades or are you going to use this for corn? Where did you get the decals for it?

Well its not a sweet as the IH box, but i love this one.  Its a Walsh box with a Midwest hoist.  Notice the official A-C add on flares on the sides.

Heres a shot of it in oats.

This is the barge box my Grandfather bought new.  At this moment I cannot remember the name of the running gear and I dont know the mfg of the box.  Yours truely is unwillingly posing for the picture.

Here are the wagons that I own: Heider #2 auger wagon, EZ Flow gravity on EZ Trail Gear, Minnesota 130 Flare Wagon on MN Super 6 gear, Minnesota #1472 barge wagon on New Idea gear-in the process of getting new paint, and last but not least Lindsay barge box on a Lindsay gear that my dad owns followed by the orginal bill of sale from 1961 for it.

My gravity box looks a little rough and I hope to give it a fresh coat of paint and decals next summer. I just bought it this past fall and I have never pulled a wagon that trailed any better. I bought the Minnesota barge wagon on a local estate farm auction. I am almost sure I am the 2nd owner of it and it has been shedded since it was bought new. I have had the MN flare wagon for a few years. I got it to haul wood chips on my tree farm. The Lindsay wagon has seen it's share of ear corn, oats, barley, and shell corn. It needs a new coat of varnish, I believe that is what he put on the wood years ago.

I will try to get some better pictures this summer and maybe some in-action photos this fall! One never knows what one may find to add to this collection!

Quite a variety of wagons you got there! I'd sure like to get some close-up photos and measurements of the Minnesota logo and model number of your Minnesota flare wagon so I could get some decals or a paint screen made. I have 2 of those sitting here , waiting to be restored. Also, what shade of green are the box supports on the sides? I need to match up with that color also.

Tom
On the MN flare wagon, I repainted them free-handed. What I did was to take a pencil and mark the edges of what was left or difference in the metal shine. Then I used a small paint brush, one for model painting and spent the time painting the letters and logo. For the MN logo, I found out from a guy at Minn-Cor, Rick Reichert, and the guy that owns the rest of what is left of MN line of farm equipment/parts/booklets, the logo actually has a couple of differences. The first one is the star with bursts coming from it marking the prison and another with individual wheat plants. The logo on my barge is the same as what is on the flare and are in very good shape.

I have asked both men about the colors and both agree that the paint that was used on MN farm machinery was whatever paint they got in. From their stories, when ever a big implement maker had over runs or paint/parts left in the warehouse, it was shipped to the prison. Most of the red paint was IH paint since it was there in Mlps but some stuff was painted in Massey red, green was JD or Oliver, yellow from JD or MM, and orange from Allis.

I went to the MN Historical Society when I found on-line that they had in the collection pictures, blueprints, inventory, account books from the prison farm equipment department. There I found a photo of my 1472 barge but it was black and white. I did find logos and placement blueprints for many pieces of equipment. The gentleman who bought out remenants of the MN farm line from the prison told me that my 1472 barge was painted orange, from what he could figure out from his printed material. I told him mine was red and he surmised that MN either painted some for a special order or they ran out of orange paint and painted the rest of the wagons with red.

I wish I could find other people associated with the MN farm line that could share more information about it with me. Rick at Minn-Cor told me as much as he knew and he didn't have anybody he knew of to send me to since most of the guys who were around in those days when they were making farm equipment are either too old or not on this planet.  I can't remember the name of the guy who bought out whatever was left from the prison, but he owns Shervin's of North Dakota.

Oh, yes I almost forgot, I will get some closer pictures and measurements to you of the logos on the flare wagon.

I live in south east Iowa , between Burlinton and Mt. Pleasant at Danville. I have an N-6 Gleaner that was orginally sold by Marzolf's. Your Minnesoata wagons are intesting.

I have just about finished my MN 1472 barge wagon. I took some pictures to share with you. I have to paint on the lettering for "Fully Guaranteed" and the running gear. I made stencils for all of the lettering, five different sizes and styles.

The barge box is 14x7 and is running on a New Idea 628 gear. The hoist is a Soo hoist. I think the final thing that would really make this wagon is a load of ear corn.

Does anybody out there know of any other MN barge wagons? I would like to find the 6x10 and the 6x12 MN barge boxes.

Last summer I bought a no-name 6'x10' barge box that I am just about ready to paint. This past weekend I bought another MN barge wagon. The model number is 1062 which is a 10'x6' box. This wagon has a real good 6 ton MN gear, Grain Master hoist, and very solid box. I am not sure how much time I will have to get this painted before corn picking but it will look good this fall with corn in it. Now, to find the MN 1262 barge wagon. Hmmm...I wonder where I can find one?!?!?

Today, my dad and I took off the corn picker for the season. In doing so, a little rearranging in the shed needed to take place; out came my dad's barge wagon he bought new. I believe in a previous post I have included the original sales receipt for it. This is a Lindsay/NuBuilt barge box on a Lindsay gear. Yes, it needs a new coat of varnish, which should be done next summer, at least that is on the list of things to do.

I found another MN barge wagon. 1472 is the model number which means it is a 14'x7' box. It is on a MN 6 ton gear. All original except for one little side board I had to replace. I believe I am the third owner. The guy I bought it from had it 15-20 years and he bought it from the neighbor who is to have bought it new.  Nice MN gear with good implement tires.  Still looking for the MN 1262 barge wagon, 12'x6'.

Wow that is a nice wagon. It isn't always easy to find a wooden wagon in that nice of condition anymore.

Here is my freshly painted MN 1062 barge wagon. The wagon has 5 different size/styles of letters. I am getting the hang of making my own stencils. I even bought new 8.5Lx14 implement tires for the front! Now to find a MN 1262 barge wagon....

This photo is circa late '20s. My dad is the boy. He was born in 1919. The enlargement shows a load of hand-picked corn - looks pretty clean! When I was a boy, one of the first loads picked every year was on this wagon. Dad parked it in a corner of the pasture near the hog lot. One of my chores was to climb on that wagon and throw a hundred or so ears to the hogs every day. That chore helped me learn how to count and also run quickly to stay ahead of a large hungry herd! The foot rest on the front was a handy place for my brother and me to sit while pretending to drive a stage coach. Oh, and Durocs only - for more than 60 years.

A photo from the '70s. I don't know who manufactured the boxes or running gears. It wasn't important at the time but now I wish I knew. The wagons are long gone.

Hi. My name is Kirk and I...I...I am a barge box-a-holic.  I can assure you that I am not. I couldn't pass up a sweetheart deal on a Heider 6'x12' barge box in great shape. I bought it from a gentleman outside of Readlyn, Iowa and a nice Midwest hoist came with it. He took great care of this barge box and recently used a deck treatment on the wood.  Next summer I plan on cleaning up the metal, priming it, and painting it. The running gear is an IH 100. I bought the gear a few years ago for just this purpose. It needs new tires and a fresh coat of paint-next summer.

Does anybody know what the official red and green colors of Heider was? The metal on my box is red and the logo is green. Is IH red or MF red and JD green close enough?

Does anybody have a good logo or stencil or decal of Heider that is available to use? I know someone had them on ebay a couple of years ago.

FW 029.JPGFW 032.JPGI'm fairly new to this forum and just discovered this thread.  This wagon used to belong to my Dad.  A year ago last winter I pulled it out of the weeds and gave it a face lift.   The running gear is a New Idea and the box is aluminum, made by the L.C.Wood Co. from Alden, Iowa.  I don't remember what make the hoist is.  Over the years I have cranked that thing up and down many times!

Thanks!
There are almost 29 feet of cable in that hoist!
I have a couple other wagons as well, but do not have pictures of them at this time. When I get them out of the shed sometime I'll get pics and add them to this thread as well.

Here's the wagon I plan on using this year. Could someone help me identify the type of flare box we've got here. There's no decals visible. I do know it sits on a JD 953 gear with a Midwest hoist. Thanks!

I picked up this wagon at an auction a few weeks ago.  I'm told it was built from a kit that used to be available through either Sears Roebuck or Montgomery Ward.  The box is 12 ft. long.

I do not know what make the running gear is.  I had to locate all new rims for it.  One was missing altogether and the other three were car rims which did not fit properly.

I have not yet tried out the hoist.

I did it again!  I was at a local farm auction and bought a 7'x12' Heider barge wagon on a 8 ton MN running gear with a midwest hoist.  I started the bidding at $250 and nickel and dimed it up to the hammer, $600. The box is in good shape---the wood needs a treatment of stain or varnish and the metal needs to be cleaned up, primed, and painted.  The MN gear is tight!! One "balding" implement tire but the other three are in real good shape.  This is the 3rd Heider barge wagon that I have seen this late summer only bring $600-$625.   Is the barge wagon market softening?

I think everything is softening with the lower grain prices. That wagon would have still brought a grand around here though, because hydraulic dump boxes of any kind are just not common. Seems back in the 50s, gravity boxes were the choice in the region.

I was doing so well this year; resisting the temptation to acquire another barge wagon. Here in SE Minnesota the barge wagon prices have overall been down but once in a while a wagon will jump in price. The temptation got the best of me and I have another barge wagon to the collection. The neighbor lady is in the mood to clean out the pole shed and here is what was in there. A 6x12 Lindsay Brothers barge box with a Cherokee hoist all mounted to a running gear. I will be working on cleaning this unit up and repainting them. The box will need some replacement boards, as will the floor. The gear will be getting new tires.

I am looking for some help. First, does any one have pictures of the barge box? I am looking for what lettering went on this box. I have one side that I was able to get the lettering, "Lindsay Bros Co." but I can not find any thing else. Next, what color was the box painted? I am pretty sure this box was made before 1960.  Last, does any one know what brand of running gear I have and what color should it be?  Thank you in advance!!

Bringing this back to the top again, a lot of neat wagons here!!

Brought these home this week.

The barge box with white side boards, is a K and S, Jo Dandy 6x12 on a New Idea gear with Midwest hoist. I bought it from the dad of one of the guys I work with. He bought it new (along with an identical one that he had previously sold) when he started farming. It had been behind a 4020 with 237 since it was new. It has had very good care and will pull straight as an arrow at 45 mph.

Box with red side boards, is a 6x12 Heider with a matching gear and hoist. Bought it at a sale in western Iowa on Saturday for $135. Pulls nice and straight with matching tires. We think it is a one owner wagon also as it has, stenciled into the frame, the lastname of the guy who had the sale.

Flare box is a David Bradley with a Sears and Roebuck gear that needs tires. Got it for free on the way home from the sale. Have a Midwest hoist located for it for the price of a 30 pack.
