Need info on Oliver 74 mounted picker

Found one, would like to get it, dont have a tractor for it yet, but I figured I could get the picker home, then worry about a tractor.  Need some basic info on this picker, years made, how hard it is to mount, etc.  I know theres atleast one guy on here that has one.  Thanks guys

I'll add what I know about them - anyone can feel free to correct anything that is wrong! I have a brochure here dated 5-63 that has a section in it on the "new" Oliver 74 Picker. When they were first new, they had the 8- and 12-roll husking beds only for it.  The sheller and snapper hopper came later. According to the parts book I have, the husking beds were rather unique - both sizes used the same basic frame and housing; filler plates were used when it was set up as an 8-roll bed. The mounting frame was considered a universal frame which could be mounted on many Oliver tractors as well as several tractors of other makes. This mount looks suspiciously close to the New Idea universal mount, but I checked this out with a gentleman I see at the Sioux Falls toy show every year. He used to work for Oliver as a sales rep years ago and he assured me these pickers were built by Oliver at their Shelbyville plant. New Idea did not have anything to do with them. Someone even told me once that they saw a New Idea sheller unit mounted on an Oliver picker - maybe they are that close but I don't know for sure! Anyway, the parts book shows mounts for Oliver/****shutt 1600, 1800, Super 77 & Super 88, 770 & 880; IH 450, 460, 560; AC D-17; MF 65 & 85 and JD 3010, 3020, 4010 & 4020. This parts book is dated 1964 so there is probably a newer one with mounts shown in it for post 1964 tractors that it also fits on. From what I've seen looking around the sheller seems to be hard to find and I'm sure the snapper hopper is in the "hen's teeth" category. That's about all I know right now - hope this helps!

So the mounts are different in between a 77/88 vs a 770/880, correct? The mounts that are with it are for a Super 88, which i assume is the same as a 88 for mounting brackets? Figured I could get the picker home first, then worry about a tractor later. Never mounted a NI or a Oliver picker, is it pretty easy? I know I can mount a IH 234 in about a half hour, sometimes less. Thanks

Tony

I'm looking thru my parts book again here... the mounts for the Super 77 & Super 88 are the same for a 770 & 880 UNLESS the 770/880 has a Power Traction Hitch, then there are 2 additional pieces required. I forgot to say anything about the screens that go on the tractor - there are also different ones for that (of course) and the 77/88 use different ones than the newer tractors. I haven't yet mounted up the New Idea that I have, but from the looks of it, it shouldn't be too hard. It looks like I should be able to get the tractor prepared and the universal mount on it in an hour or two. Easier than the JD 237, which I have mounted in the past! I assume the half hour it takes to mount the IH 234 doesn't include the time it takes to remove the fenders & 3-point arms and widen out the rear wheels (not to mention switching front ends if that needs to be done also).

Dunno if I'll be getting the picker, finances are kinda tight at the moment, and I really dont have room for another one. If anyone wants it on here though, let me know, I'll connect you with the guy that has it.
