muffler guard/shield for 3020

I have a 3020 round muffler tractor that I put a 237 on. Have side shielding and screens, but no type of muffler guard or screen. The guy I got the picker from told me he remembers his dad having some sort of metal round piece that went around the muffler but wasn't bolted together necessarily. He thought it had a separate piece that slipped over the top of the muffler. I am not sure if what they had was factory or a homerigged one.  It was worn out and hit the scrap pile long ago. I am going to try to make something if I have something to go by. Does anyone have a picture of one of the original type, or one on your tractor that you rigged up? A little pondering for a cold day and a little project to work on out in the shop... Thanks

Don't know how much help this will be, but I scanned the muffler covers page out of my 237 parts catalog to post here. Hopefully you will be able to read the part numbers, but otherwise not much help for a good picture or dimensions. I did run some of the parts numbers on the Parts Depot and Vintage Parts sites and it looks like some of them are still around, but you have to check with your local JD dealer to see if they are actually still available, and to get a price. Those places will only sell their parts through a branded dealer (a JD dealer can only order JD parts from them, IH dealer - IH parts, etc.) I'll look thru my 237 Picker brochures and see if there are any good pictures of a muffler cover in those. If I find one, I'll post it here.

I have one and it's pretty simple.  There is no bolting required.  The top has a hole for the muffler to go through.  The inside is just a light pipe to fit the round muffler and goes slightly below the hood line.  The outside is round and perforated similar to what would have been on the outside of a grain dryer or later, a combine grain tank extension.  This part goes not quite to the hoodline.  The inside and outside are straight.  I also have one I bought to put on my 4010 and it is taller and the ouside is tapered with the top wider than the bottom.  The one for the 3020 came with a picker I bought and is not for sale.  I had to buy the one for the 4010 from an obsolete parts warehouse.  It was not cheap.  It would be relatively easy to make a functional guard for your 3020 and shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.  I can send you pics of mine if you like.

Thanks for the description. If you have some pictures to share, that would be great.

I just thought of it, I have a couple pictures of right when I put the picker on at the seller's place and when I was just leaving there. I included them here.

You know, after looking at these pictures close up, and thinking about it, that is not the same type of muffler as on my 3010, maybe it is an IH type muffler, it was on the tractor when I bought it. It may not matter.
